Maeve Corrigan is the Queen of Beldain, and lives in the Hadenbury Palace, located in Northern Beldain in the Skylands where malfettos are revered. She is a Young Elite, her ability being to bring the dead back to life, but she has not told anyone since she believes it would bring hundreds of people begging for her to bring their loved ones back. She is the youngest of eight, her mother having had two husbands and seven sons before Maeve was born. She aligns with moonstone, the stone that symbolizes Moritas, the goddess of death.
She had hopes that the Dagger Society would be able to take the crown in Kenettra, opening up trade between the two countries and having someone who wouldn't discriminate against malfettos on the throne. She wished to gradually win control of Kenettra without sacrificing soldiers.
She had a romantic relationship with Lucent before she was banished because she took the blame for Tristan's death. She later joins Adelina and the Daggers on their quest to return their demonic powers to the Gods. She later marries Lucent and appoints her niece as Crown Princess.
Biography[]
Five years prior to the events of the series, her brother Tristan drowns after Lucent dares him to go out on the ice. Her mother banishes Lucent, only sparing her life because Maeve begged her to. She brings Tristan back to the life the same night Lucent leaves, saying that he never died in the first place.
Maeve first appears in the epilogue of The Young Elites, where she executes Sir Briadhe, first shooting him in each leg with her crossbow, and then sending her white Beldish tiger after him. Afterwards, her brother Augustine gives her a letter that had arrived by dove from Estenzia. She notes that it was from Lucent, and was addressed to her rather than the palace. It informs her that the king had been assassinated and that Enzo had been killed by Teren Santoro. She is displeased, and tells her brother to give the letter to their mother, the queen, and to summon her Elites. She watches him leave, while reminiscing on her time with Lucent, which is when we first learn of their secret romance.
Her brothers visit their mother's bedchamber, while Maeve goes down to the dungeons, where her youngest brother Tristan was being kept. She talks to him, informing him of the events in Kenettra. When he replies only in short sentences, she recalls how talkative he used to be, to the point where she used to yell at him to leave her alone. They were only a year apart, and had spent hours in the forest together with Lucent. Once he had died, she had brought him back, and for a while he had been the same. Then he had begun to change, until she no longer recognised him. Despite this, she decides to take him with her Kenettra.
In the few months that pass between The Young Elites and The Rose Society, her mother succumbs to illness and she becomes queen. She allows the Daggers and refugee malfettos to stay in her summer palace. When she arrives at the palace, she is greeted by Michel and Gemma, the former of which mistakenly refers to her as 'Her Royal Highness'. When Lucent and Raffaele arrive, she is seen duelling with one of her older brothers, Augustine. He bests her, causing a flurry of jokes and teases between her and her brothers, before she turns her attention to the Daggers.
Michel and Gemma kneel immediately, but Maeve is focused on Lucent. She recognises her former lover, and her lighthearted mood vanishes. She waits until Lucent kneels, watching her a moment longer, before turning to Raffaele, who follows Lucent's lead.
Appearance[]
Her only mentioned marks from the blood fever was half of her hair being black, and the other half being dark blonde. Once her powers are taken away, her hair returns to a pale blonde.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Recalling souls from the dead - Maeve has the ability as a Young Elite to bring souls back from the Underworld as she did with her brother Tristan and Enzo Valenciano.
